"Beginning of Winter" – Welcoming the Seasonal Shift with Tradition and Wellness

Nov 07, 2024

Today marks *Lidong* , also known as the “Beginning of Winter,” a significant seasonal milestone in the traditional Chinese calendar. Observed annually around November 7, Lidong signals the official start of winter according to China’s ancient lunar system, where it is one of the 24 solar terms that mark seasonal changes throughout the year. With its roots in agriculture and holistic living, Lidong reminds us to prepare for winter’s unique demands, blending seasonal foods, wellness practices, and age-old wisdom.

Historically, Lidong was a time for farmers to wind down from autumn’s harvest and transition to a period of rest and rejuvenation. Today, the tradition lives on, especially in China, as people continue to celebrate this seasonal shift. Food plays a central role in Lidong customs, particularly hearty, warming dishes that prepare the body for colder weather. In northern China, dumplings are the classic Lidong dish. According to folklore, eating dumplings on this day is said to prevent frostbite, a tradition that began with stories of community caretaking during harsh winters. Meanwhile, in southern regions, families often gather around hot pots and enjoy stews rich in lamb, chicken, and root vegetables—warming foods that help boost circulation and energy as temperatures drop.

The customs around Lidong are also deeply influenced by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which places importance on aligning one’s habits with seasonal cycles to maintain wellness. During winter, TCM recommends conserving energy and "nourishing the yang" to protect the body from the cold. Foods that warm the body, such as ginger, garlic, and protein-rich meats, are emphasized to enhance immunity and balance the body’s energy. Beyond diet, the Lidong season is seen as a time to reduce stress, get plenty of rest, and reflect, aligning with winter’s slower, quieter pace.

Communities across China and among Chinese populations worldwide take part in celebrating Lidong through local events and gatherings. These celebrations often include cooking demonstrations, traditional performances, and communal meals, reinforcing a sense of connection with both nature and cultural heritage. Social media, too, buzzes with posts of families and friends sharing their Lidong meals and memories, blending old customs with modern life.

For wellness enthusiasts, Lidong offers a reminder of how adapting daily habits to seasonal changes can enhance well-being. As winter officially begins, adopting warm, nutrient-dense foods and mindful routines not only brings comfort but also aligns with the body’s natural rhythms for better health throughout the season.
